The driver waits on a paper ticket correction, a stop gets added after the route is loaded, or an office employee has to call around for a tank status. To improve bobtail driver efficiency, look at the entire path from the customer record to the printed ticket to the truck returning at the end of the day. The driver is where the delay becomes visible, but the cause often starts in the office.
For a fuel oil or propane dealer, better efficiency is not simply about pushing drivers to make more stops. It is about giving them a route they can run, accurate information at each stop, and less back-and-forth with dispatch. That reduces miles, overtime, delivery exceptions, and frustrated customer calls without sacrificing safe work.
1. Build routes from current delivery data
A route is only as good as the information used to create it. If tank sizes, consumption rates, delivery history, addresses, or special instructions are out of date, dispatch is planning around bad assumptions. The driver then has to make judgment calls in the field, and those calls cost time.
Keep customer records current throughout the year, not just when winter demand hits. When a customer changes a gate code, gets a new dog, adds a difficult driveway, or replaces a tank, put it in the record immediately. Accurate delivery tickets give the driver the essentials: customer location, product, requested or estimated gallons, tank information, delivery notes, and clear payment or account instructions. Review routes by territory and delivery density. A route with fewer stops can be more productive than a route with more stops if those stops are tightly grouped and the truck can stay in one area. On the other hand, forcing every route to be perfectly dense can delay customers who need service sooner. The right balance depends on weather, customer commitments, driver availability, and available gallons.
Watch recurring route problems. If one neighborhood regularly creates long driveway delays, schedule it with realistic time expectations. If a certain group of accounts repeatedly causes a second trip, review their delivery schedule and tank data. Small corrections to a group of customers can remove a surprising amount of wasted travel over a season.
5. Make loading and end-of-day work predictable
Driver productivity starts before the truck rolls and continues after the last stop. Long loading lines, unclear load assignments, missing tickets, and slow ticket reconciliation can turn a normal delivery day into an overtime day.
Set a consistent process for the morning. The driver should know the assigned truck, product load, route, tickets, and priority stops before leaving the yard. If splits or multiple products are involved, confirm them before loading rather than sorting it out after the truck is already staged.
